Unsalaried Secondary

Secondary training means candidates will be teaching students aged 11 to 16, or for those trainees in Business Studies, Media Studies and Social Sciences, students aged 14 to 18.


You can expect to spend the majority of your time training in the classroom, helping to build your confidence in a school environment with the support of an experienced mentor. 

The course is full time over 36 weeks (term time only), and begins with a week-long induction period in early September where you will have the opportunity to meet fellow trainees and members of the SCITT management team.

 

Please be aware it is a condition of entry that you spend at least one day in your main placement school prior to starting the course.  The date is arranged at a mutually convenient time, but traditionally takes place in June.

 

In addition, all trainees will be invited to attend a one day pre-course induction at George Abbot School in July. 

 

The programme consists of four inter-related elements which are designed to intellectually challenge and engage trainees in pedagogic theory and practice and develop creative, innovative and reflective practitioners.

 

 

1. Mentored Experience in Schools

 

Structured individually tailored mentoring is at the heart of the School Direct programme. The Mentor has many roles, they will be your coach, role model, critical friend and reflective practitioner. The Mentor will support the trainee in meeting the level of practice required for the award of QTS, as defined in the Teacher' Standards. 

 

2. Professional Studies

 

Professional Studies take place once a week and are designed to support practical learning, trainees’ active participation and collaboration are encouraged. Our programme offers training across a wide range of topics linked to the progressive increase in trainees classroom practice.   

 

Sessions include:  

  • presentations delivered by experts in various areas of professional teaching practice;
  • developing professional learning and practice in schools;
  • group activities such as presentations;
  • group discussion, role play and collaborative working;
  • workshops;
  • visits to various educational settings;
  • blended learning employing electronic resources; and
  • observation of teachers’ practice.

 

These sessions provide an induction into the major dimensions of the education debate and foster a whole-school/whole curriculum perspective on the role of the teacher. The majority of Professional Studies will take place at George Abbot School but trainees will also visit a variety of different educational contexts as part of the programme. 

 

3. Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy

 

This is coordinated by a Lead Subject Mentor.  Sessions are led by expert practitioners and may include workshops, seminars and practical work in order to develop the knowledge, concepts and skills of the subject. 

 

4. Assignments

 

For trainees following the PGCE route, you will complete 2 presentations and 3 Masters level written assignments across the year which will be set and marked by Kingston University to meet requirements for the award of the PGCE and will be linked to your practical training in the classroom. Trainees following the QTS only route will complete 4 assignments on similar topics to those of the PGCE but these are not expected to be Masters level and are marked in-house.

 

Alternative Educational Settings

 

In addition to the four elements above all trainees will experience alternative educational settings:     

  • A 4-6 week second placement
  • Experience with pupils with challenging behaviour
  • Experience with pupils for whom English is not their first language
  • Experience in a special school with the option of an extended placement focusing on pupils with Special Education Needs.
  • A Key Stage 2 primary experience and a short Sixth Form placement 

What qualification does this course lead to? 

           

 

We will recommend you for the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) upon successful completion of the course and we offer the option to study for a PGCE (60 credits) awarded by Kingston University.

 

How much will it cost?

  

Tuition fees for School Direct Unsalaried places for 2019/20 are  £8300 for QTS only and £9250 for trainees that opt to follow the PGCE route.

Will I be employed at the end of the programme?

 

As part of the School Direct Programme trainees are expected to be employed within the Partnership of Schools at the end of the training year.
